In an age where smartphones have become ubiquitous, it’s increasingly common to see them at the dinner table. However, engaging in phone conversations or texting while eating is not just a breach of social etiquette; it also detracts from the experience of the meal and the company around us.

Why It Matters

Recent studies have shown that using smartphones during meals can lead to increased caloric intake and a decrease in the enjoyment of food. The distraction caused by phones interferes with the physiological signals of hunger and satiety, leading to overeating and a less satisfying dining experience.

Moreover, the act of reaching for our phones during a meal sends a message to our companions that they are less important than our digital interactions. It disrupts the flow of in-person conversation and the shared enjoyment that comes from a communal meal.

The Etiquette of Eating

Good table manners are a sign of respect for both the food and the people we share it with. Answering a phone call or continuing a phone conversation during a meal should be avoided unless it’s an emergency. If someone knows that the person they are contacting is currently eating, it’s courteous to postpone the call unless it’s urgent.

Creating a Positive Change

Here are some steps we can take to foster a more mindful and enjoyable mealtime:

  • Make Mealtime a Phone-Free Zone: Establish a rule that meals are a time for face-to-face interaction, not digital communication.
  • Be Present: Focus on the flavors, textures, and aromas of your food, as well as the conversation with your dining companions.
  • Set Boundaries: If you receive a call that’s not an emergency, it’s okay to let it go to voicemail. You can always return the call later.
  • Lead by Example: Encourage others by demonstrating good phone etiquette yourself.

By making a conscious effort to put away our phones during meals, we can reclaim the joy of eating and strengthen our connections with others. Let’s embrace the art of conversation and the pleasure of a shared meal, free from digital distractions.
