We are addicted to sugar. We add it to everything. But the truth is, we are poisoning ourselves. Sugar is a slow acting poison. We are fond of our cakes, jams, biscuits, buns, sugar rolls, and included with all those, our love of pasta, bread and white rice: all carbohydrates which turn to sugar as we eat them..

However, both cyanide or even arsenic, act rapidly to kill us. We do not add them to our food, but we add sugar to most of the things that we eat! But sugar is a slow acting poison – but it poisons us slowly! It is addictive. It provides us with a rapid boost of energy but quickly dies away and soon you want to eat again. Our poor diet is the cause of Insulin Resistance and diabetes. It has many other harmful effect which damages us and even shortens our lives. Go to any hospital and you will find it full, overloaded with patients on beds, most suffering from Insulin Resistance or other diabetes related problems.

Many people profit from you buying and consuming sweet things; the honest truth is not widely advertised. But truthfully, bake houses and sweet shops are harming us, they sell us mouthwatering cakes and other sugar-based goodies for their own profit.

When you look at mouth-watering fancy cupcakes, your eyes are leading you to eye surgery and blindness! Many people desperately seek the help of eye- surgeons and they, of course, willingly comply for a handsome fee! But they know the effects of sugar on the eye are irreversible!

People do not eat cakes made with cyanide or arsenic, but they happily eat cakes, donuts, chocolate, jam, carbohydrates and fizzy drinks and overtime, and still they become seriously ill from what they have eaten and have drunk. It seems like a spiral down, once you are on the spiral it is hard to get off again.

Drink enough fizzy or sweetened drinks and after a few years, ten at most and you will see signs of kidney disease. Continue on and you kidneys will rot and have to be removed!

Our bodies with their elaborate systems of balance and control mechanisms date back thousands of years from a time when there were no fizzy drinks, cakes, chocolate bars, jams, tea laden with sugar but just a few carbohydrates, perhaps honey or jaggery if one was lucky. Now, our bodies cannot cope with the avalanche of food, of sweets and carbohydrates, quite the opposite from when we followed a far more ‘down to earth’ diet, so to say!

Now, it may be better to have a personal mantra of: “let your food be your medicine!”

Cake shops and bakeries happily sell us cakes and sweet things and the hospitals continue to be overloaded with insulin resistant patients and death, both poles apart but they seem interdependent.

It is this modern diet that causes a whole range of troubles for us – and hastens our death.

Now, the health services clamour for more hospitals, complete with doctors and staff – this is the best employer in all the country.

There is little effort to broadcast atound this sad news that sugar is a kind of poison. It is especially true for the older people of Sri Lanka. But the results of Diabetes recive much action on treating the symptoms.
